NEED TO's

(c)1988, David Humes

There are many so called "secretes" to success. But the only reason I can think of that these "success attitudes" might be called "secretes," is the fact that so many people don't seem to know about them.

Or if they know about these success attitudes, they simply choose not to apply them in their lives. If this is the case, it tells me that these people simply don't wish to experience the maximum life has to offer. Or they are content with being a "get by'er."

This column addresses the people that want to be very successful. To be much more than just a "get by'er." But how can you rise above mediocrity? How can you have more time, energy and money than you need?

Success attitudes are learnable. They are as close as a local bookstore or even the public library.

One vitally important ingredient for your success is to have enough "need to's." Why do you need (not want) a lot of money? A home on the hill? A private 24-track digital recording studio? A new sampling synthesizer, etc.?

You'll never acquire much on "wants." You have to really need these things in order to generate the "fuel" to propel you to do what ever it takes, as long as it's legal, moral and ethical, to obtain them.

Writing music, practicing your instrument, producing or doing what it is you know you should be doing, requires a lot of fuel to put in the countless hours needed to obtain the success you know you can have and deserve.

Needs are how things get accomplished. You can want all you want. But until you really need something, it basically won't manifest.

The eight track recording machines were created out of a need for greater flexibility in recording music. Innovative musicians are constantly looking for better, faster, simpler and more flexible instruments to create with. Synthesizers were created and continue to be improved from this need.

Just look at the electric sampled grand pianos that are available today. They have weighted keys, sound great, are very reasonably priced and are relatively portable.

Drum sets have come a long way, too. Remember the old footage of the Beatles with Ringo beating the heck out of his set? The whole drum set looked like it was going to fall apart any minute! Today they build drum sets strong enough for "The Terminator." That's not to mention the incredible advances in electronic drums in recent years.

These instruments have evolved to where they are today out of the past needs of musicians.

First, clearly define your ultimate situation in life. Then, make a list of your "need to's." Why do you need to have these things. You should have at least ten reasons why you need to manifest your desired situation.

The more "need to's" you have, the more fuel you will have. Super successful musicians, composers, producers, etc., definitely needed large amounts of fuel to get where they're at today. And they'll always need it for sustained success.

But the majority of the energy needed for "super success" is vitally needed at the beginning stages. And this energy must be sustained until you get off the ground and can cruise above the clouds. An airplane takes about 90% of its energy to get off the ground. And about 10% to cruise.

We hope you need to be in the top 5% in the world of musicians, composers, producers or whatever your chosen path is in life is. If you truly need to be, I believe you can be. Do it now!
